The Gift of God: Eternal Life!

“What more could anyone want from God?”

If people like the woman at Jacob’s well and the people from the town of Sychar receive “living water” (John 4:10, 41); if people receive the “bread of life” that Jesus is willing to give (John 6:35); if people “hear Jesus’ words and believe God, are not condemned, and have crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24), what more could anyone want from God?  People who “hear Jesus’ words and believe God, are not condemned, and have crossed over from death to life,” surely they have had their sins forgiven; surely they’ve been put right with God; surely they trust God that he knows their individual hearts; surely they rely on God’s goodness and not their own; surely they believe Jesus when he reveals to them what his Father is like; surely they have true and lasting faith in God.  And if all of these events (“living water; bread of life; hear Jesus’ words and believe God, are not condemned, and have crossed over from death to life”) take place before Jesus dies, would any of these people hate Jesus and think it was necessary that Jesus die?  It’s hard to believe that insane religious people hated Jesus with such intensity that they actually killed him.  (John 15:25).

Jesus does not judge or condemn.  Jesus said: “As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him.  For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.  There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.”    John 12:47, 48

Eternal Life:  After Jesus said this, he looked toward Heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come.  Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.  For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.  Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.  I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.  And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”   John 17:1-5

Jesus said: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.”  John 6:27

Jesus said: “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

Jesus said: “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” John 6:63

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’.” Matt. 4:4

Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Mark 13:31

For people like the woman at Jacob’s well near the town of Sychar who want to receive “living water,” and for others who want to partake of the “bread of life,” all they have to do is one thing:  Ask for it!  (John 4:10).  God is more than willing to give it.
